November 2020

Hello and welcome to the first update from Fitting Into My Genes.

As well as my usual research, I have spent the last few weeks getting the structure of the website how I want it. It’s been quite a challenge, as at first I wasn’t entirely sure of what I wanted it to look like! I knew what I wanted to achieve but wasn’t sure of the best way to present it. Massive thanks go to Patrick for helping me and showing me how to set up the pages and menus. I really hope you all enjoy the website and find it interesting. If you do and you want to receive a post like this one each month to notify you of new stuff to read, please subscribe to my mailing list at the top right of any page.

I must acknowledge the helpful members of the Facebook groups Hull the Good Old Days and Old Hull for generously sharing information about Dixon’s Entry in Hull and the users of the British Genealogy Forum for helping me on my way with maritime research.

What’s new?
  • Jubb Homepage – See the charts and trees relating to my Jubb ancestors.
  • Thomas Jubb – Read all about my 3 x great-grandfather Thomas, a shoemaker and the events in his lifetime.
  • Henry Jubb – My 2 x great-grandfather Henry was a sailor in the Merchant Navy. I am still working on our Henry but will update you in due course when I have more information on his career.
What’s next?

Next time, I hope to have more information about the maritime career of Henry Jubb. However, due to Covid-19 restricting access to archives that may have to wait a while. Look out for an article, with images about the poor housing the Jubbs and hundreds of thousands like them, all over the country, were forced to live in.

I’d also like to have put in some order and added to the Giblin information that I’ve made a start on. I know that they came from Ireland to Stockport, Cheshire in the mid 1830s and from there, my ancestors came to Hull. You will hopefully be able to read about them and also their family members who travelled further afield to New York, America.

If you do explore the site you may find some pages with just a bit of information or with a lot of writing. These are pages I have made some sort of start on, they’re not quite ready for you but I don’t want to hide them from view altogether, I want you to know they are there and I am on it! Rest assured, I will be adding to these with more information and charts. When I do, you’ll hear about it here.

The research I have although lots of it, is just the tip of the iceberg. There is so much more for me to learn about the lives and times of my ancestors and their families and it will take me a long time to do this and to get all it on the website. Primarily, I am doing this for myself, to further my own knowledge but if it also interests you, please get on the mailing list if you are not already to make sure you hear about new content.

Thank you for reading this and until next time just remember, you cannot choose your family!
